Why, when ad how to take them for maximum benefit?

It is said that there is a right time for everything - and this is proving to be true when it comes to taking dietary supplements too.

The 'Changing Health Priorities' survey of 13,000 people from 24 countries, recently conducted by Herbalife Nutrition and the Council for Responsible Nutrition, found that 89% of respondents are now taking steps to improve their health, including but not limited to including vitamins and other supplements in their daily ritual. 77% of respondents reported wanting to learn more about the various health benefits of supplementation.

Can supplements replace healthy eating?

Proper nutrition is the foundation of good health, and supplements help us to make sure we are providing our bodies with all the nutrients they need to enhance the positive effects of eating nutritious foods, including adequate protein and a variety of fruits and vegetables - but they do not replace them.

How do I take dietary supplements?

Follow the directions on the label. Many supplements should be taken with a meal.

Always take supplements as recommended on the label. Many vitamins and other supplements should be taken with a meal, drinking water generously. Eating starts the digestive process by which our bodies break down supplements. Taking them on an empty stomach can cause nausea. The most common culprits are: iron, magnesium and fish oil, which irritate the digestive tract. Because of the side effects from taking supplements on an empty stomach, some people stop taking them altogether and deprive themselves of essential nutrients. Many people claim to feel better when they take vitamins with food.

Why take supplements?

Supplements provide what is missing or appears in your diet in small amounts. We often eat too little protein for breakfast and lunch and too much for dinner. A great way to start the day is with a protein supplement in the form of a healthy shake. Protein not only provides the body with the energy it needs, but is also crucial for a healthy immune system.

B vitamins stimulate metabolism and brain function; in the evening or before bed can be too stimulating. It is recommended taking B vitamins in the morning for more energy for a successful start to the day. Check the labels to see if any of your supplements contain caffeine. If so, it can provide you with a valuable energy boost - but never take these supplements within six hours before going to bed.

Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are also better absorbed when you consume them with a meal or snack that contains at least a teaspoon of fat (about 5 grams of fat). The same applies to multivitamins, which usually contain fat-soluble vitamins.

Remember to take care of your health!
